Department of Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice visited Akwesasne at the Opening of Akwesasne’s Water Treatment Plant at Kawehnoke. Only a few months earlier in the Christmas season of 2005, the people of Kashechewan First Nation were forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere. Akwesasne in cooperation with the Canadian Red Cross and the city of Cornwall took in hundreds of Cree people from this northern community, providing food, lodging, community activities and attempting to meet their health and social needs. For Akwesasne this was an example of a water system gone bad. With a host of examples of inferior water systems, Akwesasne will insure that doesn’t happen in Akwesasne.
