This year, Tsi Snaihne and the Snye Recreation Centre are delighted to host the 16th Annual Akwesasne Winter Carnival 2007, scheduled for early February. The week-long event includes, as it has in past years, indoor and outdoor activities such as pie and cookie competitions, breakfasts, brunches and dinners, live entertainment, the Carnival King and Queen pageant, and baby-photo contests, along with many, many others. The Akwesasne Winter Carnival attracts varying levels of outdoor-enthusiasts for the fishing derby, horseshoes, snow-golf, broom-ball and of course, the highly anticipated boot-hockey tournament.

Past Winter Carnivals featured an evening of entertainment for the community elders that included dinner and live entertainment. The 15th annual Carnival, organized for 2006 by Tim Thompson and Al Bennett, along with members of the Akwesasne Mohawk Police, graciously served the dinners to the elders.

The 14th annual Winter Carnival, hosted in 2005 by Tsi Snaihne, along with Snye Recreation and CKON 97.3 FM, saw the birth of “Akwesasne Idol,” an amateur singing contest based on the popular American and Canadian television contest. The “Akwesasne Idol” event filled the Snye Recreation hall to capacity and beyond, with the audience spilling onto the steps outside of the arena in an effort to listen to the talented singers competing for the honor of being named “Akwesasne Idol.” The 2007 Winter Carnival will once again host this exciting event, and anticipation is growing.

Snye Recreation and the Carnival Committee will kick off the 16th annual Akwesasne Winter Carnival with an elders dinner, followed by the long list of scheduled indoor and outdoor events that will attract young and old alike. As is every year, Everyone from near and far, Akwesasne and its neighbouring communities, are welcome and encouraged to participate in this joyful celebration of winter.
