COMMUNITY MEMBERS CAN STILL FILE COMPLAINTS INVOLVING CBSA

Tsiothohrko:wa//January 7, 2009

AKWESASNE MOHAWK TERRITORY — The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is reminding community members that it is continuing to receive written complaints and statements involving the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). The Mohawk Council is issuing the reminder following reports that community members are still being subjected to unfair treatment by some CBSA Officers. There are also reports that wrongful vehicle seizures and fines are still being lodged against Akwesasne Mohawks at the temporary port in Cornwall.

If you have encountered unprofessional conduct or have been unfairly treated at Canada Customs, a complaint can be filed at MCA’s Justice Department. Please contact Lynne White at 575-2250 (ext. 2418) to submit a written complaint. Be prepared to provide the following information:

Or, if your vehicle was seized and MCA paid your fine, your assistance is needed to file an appeal and have the paid fine returned.  If you haven't already done so, please contact Dawn David at
575-2348 (ext.2204).

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne appreciates the community’s patience as it continues efforts to implement reasonable solutions to the ongoing situation with the CBSA.
