Caravan of Supporters from Six Nations Reserve
Ohiari:ha / June 27, 2009Akwesasne, Ontario -The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne was recently made aware of a Caravan making its way to Akwesasne lending support to the opposition of the arming of CBSA Officers next week. While the support is greatly appreciated, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs respectfully request that those supporters halt the Caravan or move the destination to other locations, such as Ottawa. Presently, the rally site is manned by community members, is organized and peaceful. It is imperative that it remain so, for the safety of all those involved.
In addition, Health Canada issued an advisory suggesting First Nations communities cancel or postpone large social gatherings to prevent the further spread of the H1N1 virus. This advisory factored heavily into the Councils’ decision.
It is for these reasons that the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne recommends the Caravan organizers revise their plans. The top priority of the three Akwesasne Councils is to keep Akwesasne safe and secure.
