In response to rising water levels and ice jams reported on the St. Regis River in the southern portion of Akwesasne, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Emergency Measures and Environment staff are closely monitoring water levels in the northern portion as well.  Although the risk of flooding is highest near the former St. Regis River dam in Hogansburg, MCA staff will monitor and report any risk of flooding in the northern portion and MCA jurisdiction.

MCA staff are in contact with emergency personnel at the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and will share any information with regard to potential flooding in any part of the Akwesasne community.

With recent heavy snowfall and warmer temperatures in the forecast later this week, residents near the St. Regis River should be aware of the possibility of flooding and keep informed through CKON 97.3, the MCA website and Facebook page, and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe website and Facebook page.

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has established shelters in the case of emergency evacuations and advises those closest to the high-risk areas near Hogansburg to be prepared, have valuables stored and important documents on hand.  High-risk homes are being monitored closely by emergency staff.

If you have an emergency, please contact the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service at 613-575-2000 (northern portion) or the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police at 518-358-9200.
