Skidders Beach Swimming Advisory Lifted
Ohiarihako:wa / July 16, 2015
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Community Health Program would like to inform the community that the swimming advisory for Skidders Beach on Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island) has been lifted.
The current water samples collected from all public beaches in Akwesasne have shown that the water quality is safe and E.coli levels are below the Beach Management Protocol Standard.
Bacterial counts reflect the conditions at the time of sampling and are subject to change depending on weather conditions and river levels.
The community is reminded that Community Health will be conducting water samplings and monitoring beaches on a weekly basis throughout the summer season until August 30, 2015.
The following are some helpful tips for swimming safety:
- Never leave children unsupervised near water.
- When boating or canoeing, every passenger should always wear a life jacket, even if they are advanced swimmers.
- Avoid swimming if you are too tired, too cold, suffer from heat exhaustion, or are too far away from safety.
- Avoid diving in unfamiliar or shallow waters; this can lead to serious spinal injuries.
