Telephone Callers Pretending to be Fraud investigators for a Credit Card Company in Order to Obtain Credit Card Security Codes.
Akwesasne be aware of the latest scam which has occurred to community residents this week:
Telephone calls are being made to Akwesaronon wherein the caller is posing as a fraud investigator for a major credit card company. The caller advises that the credit card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern in India, and they are calling to verify if the transaction is authentic.
Of course the transaction was not made by the resident, and when the caller is advised of this, he then states that he had the first 2 digits of the credit card number, but requested the rest of the numbers so that the purchase could be cancelled.
Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service advises “just hang up”. A credit card company is not going to call you asking for information they already know. This is a scam.
If you do provide your credit card number to one of these callers, call your Bank and have a new card reissued with a new number.
Contact the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service at 613-575-2340 if you receive a telephone call similar to this one. You can also call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre toll-free at 1-888-495-8501.
