Congratulations are extended to two Akwesasne community members who are recipients of engineering-related awards. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne's Department of Technical Services (DTS) held a presentation ceremony for both winners on August 30, 2016.
The Gerald Sharrow Award is presented annually to an Akwesasne student who is entering post-secondary school with a major in engineering, construction, or a related field. The recipient of this year’s award is Taelor Jock who will be studying Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Seneca College. The award is named for a 25-year employee of DTS and former MCA chief who was vital in seeing many community projects completed throughout his tenure. Mr. Sharrow’s granddaughters, Kyla Gray and Marcey Thompson, attended the award presentation on behalf of their family. Mr. Cole received a $500 bursary with his award and his name will be engraved on a large plaque that hangs in the DTS office.
The second award was a Student Achievement Award from the Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation. These awards are given to First Nations students who have already begun their post-secondary education in the science, technology or engineering fields. Blake Tarbell, who is entering his second year at the University of British Columbia, represented Akwesasne as the recipient of one of these awards from the OFNTSC. Mr. Tarbell received a $1000 bursary.
Good luck and much success is wished upon both recipients!
