Akwesasne Vs. Kahnawa:ke Winter Coat Drive For Standing Rock
Seskehko:wa/September 22, 2016
Akwesasne is challenging Kahnawa:ke to see which community can collect the most coats in a Coat Drive for Standing Rock.
Mohawk Council of Akwesasne District Chief Troy Thompson and chiefs from the Mohawk Council of Kahnawa:ke recently visited the Standing Rock Sioux community in North Dakota, where thousands have gathered at a camp to protect the tribe’s lands from the Dakota Access Pipeline construction. With winter coming, colder temperatures will soon arrive and the “protectors” and their families at the site will need to stay warm.
To help, the Akwesasne and Kahnawa:ke chiefs decided to challenge each other in a goodwill competition to see whose community can collect the most jackets and warm clothing pieces (coats, hoodies, thermal wear, etc.). All sizes will be accepted.
The first Akwesasne vs. Kahnawa:ke Standing Rock Jacket Drive will be held:
Date: Saturday, September 24, 2016, 7 am – 10 am
Location : Kawehno:ke Fire Hall (HAVFD Station #2)
SPECIAL NOTE: Community members are welcome and encouraged to place letters of support for Standing Rock in the pocket of the jackets.
This is the first of a series of coat drives that will be held. If you have any questions or would like to arrange a drop off of jackets/warm clothing, please contact Kawehno:ke District Chief Troy Thompson at 613-363-3498.
