The Department of Economic Development provides assistance to Akwesasronon for business development, business planning, Council owned projects such as Skakarati Sub-division, Alternative Energy Project, Administer Quebec grants AIF, and also assistance in some training.

Department Goals:
- To initiate a community campaign to “Support Akwesasne Businesses” by buying locally.
- To assist people who are expanding or starting a business.
- To assist the community to become more self-sufficient through the creation of a strong economic base.
- To increase tourism and promote Akwesasne to outside consumers and businesses.
- To offer informational courses on entrepreneurship.
- To manage the Peace Tree Mall, Stanley Island cabins, and Thompson Island Cultural Camp.
- To maintain partnerships with Akwesasne Career & Employment Support Services (ACESS), Ohwista Corporation, Akwesasne Economic Development Agency (AEDA), and the Iohahi:io Akwesasne Education & Training Institute.
