About Us

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) is the elected community government of the Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne. Representing the interests of the Akwesasronon people, MCA is responsible for overseeing a wide range of programs, services, and initiatives across the community.

Akwesasne is a unique Mohawk community located along the St. Lawrence River, where the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec meet the U.S. state of New York. The community is divided into three districts: Kawehnó:ke (Cornwall Island), Kaná:takon (St. Regis), and Tsi Snáihne (Snye). Every three years, residents elect four (4) District Chiefs from each district, along with one Grand Chief elected by the entire community — making up a 13-member Council.

Together, the Chiefs form the Mohawk Council. Each Chief accepts political responsibility for specific areas of community work and participates in portfolio committees that help achieve the strategic goals of the organization and meet the evolving needs of the community.

MCA’s leadership and staff have come together to define a clear path forward — guided by a shared vision and mission that reflect the values, responsibilities, and hopes of the Akwesasronon:

Our Vision

Tsi nén:we wa’kwarihwaientáhkwen: Our Future, Our Responsibility.

Our Mission

With a good mind, it is our responsibility to protect and exercise our inherent rights while creating sustainable partnerships and building a strong community for future generations.

About Akwesasne: The Land Where The Partridge Drums

Akwesasne is a historically significant Mohawk community whose name means “Land Where the Partridge Drums.” The territory stretches across the St. Lawrence River and includes scenic islands, winding rivers, and a rich landscape that has supported the Mohawk people for generations.

The Mohawks — Kanien’kehá:ka, meaning “People of the Flint” — are one of the founding nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, also known as the Six Nations or “People of the Longhouse.” As the easternmost nation, the Mohawks are recognized as the Keepers of the Eastern Door.

Long before European contact, Kanien’kehá:ka people lived along the St. Lawrence River Valley. Akwesasne was among the many settlements in the region and remains one of the largest Kanien’kehá:ka communities today. Other Mohawk communities include: Kahnawà:ke, Kanesatake, Tyendinaga, Ganienkeh, Kanatsiohareke, Ohswé:ken, and Wahta.

Following the imposition of international borders, Akwesasne became divided by the Canada–U.S. boundary and further split between the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Despite these colonial divisions, the community remains united by shared history, kinship, and culture.
