COMMUNITY SAFETY NOTICE: AVOID TRAVELLING ON ICE
The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) reminds community members to stay off the ice on local waterways. Conditions are increasingly unsafe, and travelling — whether by foot, vehicle, snowmobile, or ATV — can quickly become life-threatening.
When individuals or vehicles become stranded on frozen waterways, emergency services such as AMPS and the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department (HAVFD) may need to respond. These situations can escalate into complex and hazardous search-and-rescue operations, putting both those involved and first responders at risk.
Recent fluctuating temperatures have weakened the ice, making the surface unpredictable and dangerous. Icebreaker ships will also pass through the St. Lawrence River soon. These high-powered vessels break up ice to prevent jams and maintain safe commercial shipping lanes, further destabilizing the area.
AMPS strongly urges all residents to avoid walking, riding, or driving on the ice.
No ice is ever completely safe. Staying off the frozen surface protects your safety — and the safety of emergency responders.
