OFFICIAL RESULTS OF AKWESASNE ELECTION LAW REFERENDUM

The Court reached its decision on March 16, 2026, upholding the results of the January 31, 2026 referendum.

On March 23, 2026, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne passed a resolution accepting the referendum results and confirming the amendment to Section 16.2(a) of the Akwesasne Election Law.

As a result, the previously published results are now confirmed as official.

The referendum ballot question stated: As a Voter of the Mohawks of Akwesasne, do you approve of the proposed amendment to the Akwesasne Election Law Section 16.2(a), to read:

"(a) A petition requesting the removal of a District Chief is signed by an equal number plus one of eligible voters from that District Chief’s district, based on the official total number of votes he or she received on election or by-election day, and delivered to the Council at a duly convened General Meeting; or…”

The results are as follows:

“Yes” votes in favor of the proposed amendment: 174
“No” votes opposed to the proposed amendment: 89

Therefore, the amendment to Section 16.2(a) of the Akwesasne Election Law (AEL# 2024-01, MCR 2024/2025 #101) is confirmed to have passed.

The Department of Justice will update and republish the Akwesasne Election Law within seven (7) days following enactment of the resolution and add the updated law to the Akwesasne Law Registry.
