AKWESASNE BURN BAN IN EFFECT

AKWESASNE — Due to dry weather conditions over the past several weeks, there remains an increased risk of uncontrolled wildfires in Akwesasne and surrounding areas. As a result, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA), the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT), and the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department (HAVFD) are issuing a burn ban, effective immediately, for all of Akwesasne — both the northern and southern portions.

This precaution follows the wildland fire that occurred over the weekend in the Tsi Snaihne (Snye) area. The councils extend their sincere appreciation to the HAVFD and surrounding departments for their quick and coordinated response in bringing the fire under control and preventing further damage.

During this time, all open-air burning is strictly prohibited, including brush fires, burning barrels, and bonfires that contain leaves, grass, or other flammable materials. Such fires pose a serious risk of spreading rapidly and may endanger lives, property, and natural areas.

Small, contained campfires for cooking or warmth are permitted only if they are in an enclosed fire pit made of metal or stone, preferably with a cover to help contain embers. Community members are asked to use extreme caution with all potential ignition sources, including the safe disposal of cigarettes.

Please respect this burn ban, as it is intended to protect the safety of all community members. The ban will be enforced, and violators may be subject to fines.
