AKWESASNE MEMBERSHIP BOARD KANA:TAKON BY-ELECTION

The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer is advising the community of an upcoming Akwesasne Membership Board By-Election for the District of Kana:takon. Two (2) seats are available for the remainder of the term ending October 7, 2027.

To be eligible as a candidate for the Membership Board, a person must satisfy all of the following criteria:

1. Must be at least twenty-five (25) years of age on the nomination date.
2. Must be a Member of Akwesasne.
3. Must be Onkwehonwe, and at least one (1) natural parent must be a Member of Akwesasne.
4. Must have resided in the Territory of Akwesasne for at least ten (10) consecutive years prior to nomination.
5. Candidates for Board Member positions representing a District must have resided in that District for at least one (1) year immediately prior to nomination.
6. Must not have been dismissed from the Membership Board within the last four (4) years prior to nomination.
7. Must consent to and provide Criminal Record Information (CPIC) at least fifteen (15) days prior to the election.
8. Must not have been convicted of an indictable offence in Canada or a felony in the United States within ten (10) years prior to nomination. 

Nominations will take place on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Kana:takon School.

Nominees will have until Friday, February 27, 2026, no later than 12:00 p.m. (noon), to submit their completed Akwesasne Membership Board nomination package to the Chief Electoral Officer at 15 Akwesasne Street, Angus Mitchell Memorial Building, Village of Kana:takon.

Should more than two (2) candidates submit completed nomination packages, a By-Election will be required. The tentative date for the Akwesasne Membership Board Kana:takon By-Election is Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the location to be determined. If required, Advance Poll dates are scheduled for March 19 and March 20, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day.

The last day to be added to the Voter’s List is March 26, 2026, no later than 12:00 p.m. (noon).
