BURN BAN LIFTED IN AKWESASNE

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA), Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT), and Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department (HAVFD) are informing the community that the Akwesasne burn ban is officially lifted, effective September 3, 2025.

The decision to lift the burn ban follows recent rainfall, which has reduced the risk of uncontrolled wildfires.

With the lifting of the ban, residents are now permitted to conduct open burning activities, including brush fires, fires in burning barrels, and bonfires.

All community members are asked to exercise extreme caution and follow these safety guidelines:

Small campfires in contained fire pits, such as those made of metal or stone, remain an acceptable and safe way to enjoy a fire. Always use caution and responsibly handle potential ignition sources, including properly disposing of cigarettes.
