CALL OUT FOR KANIEN’KÉHA & SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS

The Chief Referendum Officer (CRO) is seeking three (3) Kanien’kéha language interpreters and three (3) Sign language interpreters, one for each District, to assist with the upcoming Akwesasne Election Law Referendum on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

These are appointed positions under the CRO for a short-term assignment on the day of the referendum.

How to Apply:
Interested individuals must submit a short letter of interest by Wednesday, January 21, 2026, no later than 4:00 p.m. Letters can be submitted to the Chief Referendum Officer by email at chief.electoral.officer@akwesasne.ca. For questions, call CRO Cheryl Jacobs at 613-575-2250 ext. 2126.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Not be a sitting member of Council, Justice of the Peace, or Justice of the Akwesasne Mohawk Court
  • Not be a sitting member of the Akwesasne Review Commission
  • Be in Good Standing under Akwesasne’s Good Standing Policy
  • Have a clear criminal reference check, if selected

Kanien’kéha Language Interpreters:

  • Provide interpretation for community members wishing to use Kanien’kéha
  • Translate the contents of the referendum ballot and explain the referendum voting process

Sign Language Interpreters:

  • Provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for community members requiring ASL
  • Ensure understanding of the referendum ballot and voting process

Compensation: $50.00 per hour

Workday: Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Referendum Polling Stations
