WHERE TRADITION BLOOMS: CORN HUSK FLOWER CLASS WITH LAND-BASED HEALING

The MCA Department of Health’s Land‑Based Healing Program recently hosted a beautiful and meaningful Corn Husk Flower‑Making Workshop, bringing community members together for an afternoon of learning, creativity, and connection.

Participants were guided through the history and cultural significance of corn husks and their importance to our people, before rolling up their sleeves and beginning the hands‑on work of creating corn husk flowers. After choosing their colours, each person crafted flowers that reflected their own unique style — no two creations were the same.

The room was filled with smiles, laughter, and rich conversation as hands stayed busy shaping and tying each flower. Some conversations flowed entirely in Mohawk, adding to the warmth and sense of cultural continuity that made the afternoon so special.

Lunch was generously provided by the Mohawk Assembly of God, allowing participants to relax, share a meal, and enjoy one another’s company.

Nia:wen/Thank you to our instructors and participants for making this workshop such an enjoyable, memorable, and heart‑warming day. Moments like these remind us of the strength found in tradition, creativity, and coming together as a community.
