LAND-BASED HEALING BLOOMS WITH THE TOTAS
The MCA Department of Health’s Land‑Based Healing Program got crafty during a joyful cornhusk forever flower workshop at Iakhihsohtha Lodge, beautifully hosted by Iawentas Nanticoke.
Our totas were delighted as they created one or more handcrafted cornhusk flowers — each a special piece to brighten their rooms and add a personal touch to their décor. The workshop truly came alive when instructions were shared in Kanien'kéha, sparking excitement, connection, and meaningful conversation among the residents and the instructor in our traditional language. For those who weren’t fluent, Iawentas thoughtfully translated the instructions into English, ensuring everyone could fully take part.
No one was left out of the experience. Totas who were unable to attend the workshop were lovingly remembered, with staff creating extra cornhusk flowers and delivering them directly to their rooms.
Laughter echoed throughout the Lodge as residents smiled from ear to ear, filling the space with warmth, joy, and community spirit.
Nia:wen to Iawentas for instructing and bringing such enthusiasm, cultural connection, and happiness to our totas!
