MCA CALLS BY-ELECTION FOR ONE KANA:TAKON DISTRICT CHIEF

Kenténha/October 8, 2025 — Pursuant to the Akwesasne Election Law, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Executive Director has called for a By-Election to be held for one (1) Kana:takon District Chief, for the remainder of the 2024-2027 term. The By-Election will be held on December 13, 2025.

Nominations will be held at the Kana:takon School foyer on Saturday, November 8, 2025. Nominations will be open from 9 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. 

Nomination Process:

Eligible voters may nominate or second a candidate as many times as there are seats available. In this By-Election you are eligible to nominate or second ONE Eligible candidate. If you are nominating a candidate, please ensure you attend with your seconder and bring your status card.

Please check the Voter’s List located at the Post Office or Village Currency to ensure you are eligible to nominate. The Kana:takon Voter’s Lists are now posted at these locations.

Candidates wishing to accept their nomination will have until November 12, 2025, no later than 12:00 p.m. to do so.

Any nominee wishing to accept their nomination must:

(a)  Complete the Eligibility of candidates - Schedule “E”, and

(b) Do so by 12 noon of the third business day following nomination by submitting Schedule “E” to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).

If only one candidate is nominated, then the process of a By-Election will end. The candidate will be acclaimed once they submit the required documentation. The By-Election date would then be cancelled.

If two or more candidates accept their nomination for the District of Kana:takon, the process of the By-Election will continue. By-Election voting is scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025, location yet to be determined. If the By-Election proceeds, the date of the Advanced Polls will be held on December 4 & 5, 2025.
