MCA SWEARS IN NEWLY ELECTED DISTRICT CHIEFS

On Friday, December 19, 2025, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) held a swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected District Chiefs of Kana:takon and Kawehno:ke, following the recent by-election. The event took place at the Kawehno:ke Recreation Center with community members, Council, and staff in attendance.  

 

The by-election filled three Council seats: two for the Kana:takon district and one for the Kawehno:ke district. Cody David was sworn in as Kana:takon District Chief, and Tom “Gulla” Thomas was sworn in as Kawehno:ke District Chief. Teresa Oakes, also elected as a Kana:takon District Chief, was unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances. Her swearing-in will be arranged separately as soon as possible.  

 

Justice of the Peace Alexandra David administered the oaths of office, officially welcoming the new Chiefs to Council. MCA leadership shared remarks highlighting the important work ahead and the Council’s ongoing commitment to serve the people of Akwesasne with integrity, accountability, and care.  

 

“This honour also comes with great responsibilities and the impact of your leadership can be far-reaching, across generations. You each bring different skills, education and life experiences,” said Executive Director Shannon Roundpoint.  “I wish you the best in making decisions that are good for the community today, as well as for the future.”   

Grand Chief Leonard Lazore also addressed the attendees, warmly welcoming the new Chiefs to Council. “Today marks the beginning of an important chapter for our Council and our community,” he noted. “I look forward to working with Chiefs Tom ‘Gulla’ Thomas, Cody David and Teresa Oakes as we work together for the benefit of Akwesasronon.”
