MCA WELCOMES NEW SERVICE MANAGER OF PROTECTION SERVICES
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is pleased to welcome Jon Michael Lazore as the new Service Manager of Protection Services with the Department of Community & Social Services.
JM began his career with DCSS in 2015 at the Ionkwanonhsasetsi Adolescent Treatment Center (IATC), first as a Summer Student and later as a Case Aid supporting Indigenous youth in their wellness journeys. JM's path toward a Case Supervisor role with IATC gave him valuable experience in case management, advocacy, teamwork, and trauma-informed practice.
In 2019, JM joined Akwesasne Child & Family Services, where he held a number of roles, including: Band Representative, Case Manager, Youth Delegate, Chief Steward (CUPE 5458), and Ongoing Services Supervisor. These experiences gave him a strong understanding of the needs, strengths, and challenges within the community and deepened his commitment to supporting families through culturally grounded services.
JM has completed studies in Police Foundations, Bachelors of Indigenous Social Work and is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work specializing in Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency. His education and experience support his goal of promoting services and policies that respect traditional knowledge while using modern practices to benefit families and the community and ensuring that our operations continue to align with evolving federal, provincial, and upcoming Akwesasne child welfare law.
In his new role, JM will work to build strong relationships with his team, community partners, and external organizations. He is committed to supporting frontline staff through coaching and development, promoting wellness, and encouraging teamwork. JM also hopes to help shift community perception of the protection field by emphasizing that our work is grounded in care, prevention, and support, not just intervention. He remains dedicated to strengthening community-driven social work in Akwesasne, supporting self-determination, healing, and wellness.
Please join us in welcoming Jon Michael to his new role!
