MOHAWK COUNCIL OF AKWESASNE HOSTS IROQUOIS CAUCUS MEETING

The Iroquois Caucus represents the Haudenosaunee communities: Kahnawa:ke, Kanehsata:ke, Akwesasne, Tyendinaga, Six Nations of the Grand River, and Oneida Nation of the Thames. Together, they work to protect their rights, land, language, culture, and resources, while advocating for their jurisdiction and addressing shared challenges. Throughout the three-day meeting, participants discussed a range of topics including financial updates, organizational structure, trade and commerce protocols, justice initiatives, and infrastructure development. 

One of the highlights of the gathering was a joint session with Regional Director of General Michael O'Byrne of Indigenous Services Canada and Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Atly. The discussion focused on strengthening Nation-to-Nation relationships and exploring concrete steps the federal government can take to become a more effective and respectful partner to First Nations communities in the region.

The Caucus also welcomed Grand Chief Constant Awashish of the Conseil de la Nation Atikamekw, whose participation added valuable perspective to the discussions and reinforced the importance of inter-Nation dialogue and collaboration.
