SONGS, DANCES & SMILES: NNATC BRINGS JOY AND CULTURE TO OUR TOTAS

The Native North American Travelling College’s (NNATC) travel troupe recently paid a special visit to the totas at Tsiionkwanonhso:te, bringing culture, laughter, and connection to residents and staff alike. The day turned into a joyful traditional social, made even more special with the participation of students and guests from the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School (AMS), Sacred Heart Catholic School, and Bishop MacDonnell Catholic School.

The NNATC travel troupe filled the room with beautiful traditional social songs and led lively dances that had students, staff, and residents joining in together. Smiles were shared all around as generations came together through music and movement.

After the social, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch featuring Indian tacos and corn soup, followed by hands‑on activities that brought even more joy. Students and residents worked side by side on crafts such as paintings, sweetgrass braided ornaments, and friendship bracelets — each lovingly created and gifted to the elders.

We extend a heartfelt nia:wen/thank you to everyone who helped make this day so memorable:

  • April Thomas‑Cook and TJ Point — Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School
  • Amanda Landry, Kaydon Sylvester — Bishop MacDonnell and Sacred Heart Catholic Schools
  • Melissa Mader-Tardiff — Indigenous Education Team, Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario
  • Native North American Travelling College Travel Troupe

Nia:wen for making our totas’ day extra special. Your kindness, time, and cultural sharing were truly appreciated by both the residents and staff. 💛
