RABIES VACCINE DISTRIBUTION ON KAWEHNÓ:KE — SEPTEMBER 2025

The MCA Environment Program's Conservation Office will be distributing oral rabies vaccine baits by hand across Kawehnó:ke (Cornwall Island) throughout the month of September.

Normally, rabies vaccine baits are dropped by aircraft, but in urban or populated areas, that method isn’t feasible. Instead, trained crews distribute the baits by hand to ensure safe and thorough coverage. The baits will be placed in areas such as flower gardens, hedges, wooded or shrubby areas, and other natural habitats where wildlife like foxes, raccoons, and skunks may come into contact with them.

This hand distribution is part of a larger provincial effort to control the spread of rabies following its recent re-emergence in Ontario. A map of Kawehnó:ke is provided below, showing the number of baits per section that will be distributed.
