REMINDER OF AKWESASNE BURN BAN IN EFFECT MARCH 16 TO MAY 14

AKWESASNE – (Onerahtókha/April 9, 2026) The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) are providing a reminder of the Spring burn ban in effect from March 16 to May 14 in Akwesasne.

Due to the high winds, relatively low humidity and warmer seasonal temperatures, the risk of an uncontrollable fire is at a near critical level. Should a fire start due to these conditions, it would be difficult to contain and poses a risk to personal property and individual’s safety, in turn, requiring a response from the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department, limiting their capacity to respond to other emergency calls.

The burn ban specifically prohibits open burning of brush, tree limbs, lawn trimmings/grass, and building materials. Recreational fires are allowed during this community-wide burn ban, which include fires that burn charcoal, dry, clean or untreated wood. Recreational fires include ceremonial bonfires, small cooking fires, and fires that are less than three feet tall and four feet in diameter.

Please be respectful of this burn ban and recognize that it is intended to keep our community safe. The burn ban will be enforced, and violators may be subject to fines.

To apply for a burn permit for a special burn, please contact the SRMT Environment Division’s Air Quality Program at (518) 358-5937 or the Compliance Department at (518) 358-2273.
