WATERSHED CONDITIONS: FLOOD OUTLOOK ISSUED MARCH 4

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne would like to share a flood outlook from the South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC), issued on March 4, 2026. Rising temperatures and rain are expected to trigger the spring freshet, causing river water levels to increase and conditions near rivers and waterbodies to become unsafe.

Forecast & Conditions:

  • Daytime temperatures are expected to rise above zero starting March 6, with rainfall up to 25 mm by March 7 and additional rain possible March 10–13.
  • Snowpack is slightly above normal, while river ice is thinner than usual.
  • Water levels are currently low but normal and are expected to rise, with peak levels around March 13. Widespread flooding is not anticipated yet, but localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible depending on the amount and intensity of rainfall received.

Risks:

  • Fast-flowing rivers, slippery and unstable banks, and unsafe ice conditions.
  • Potential for ice jams near bridges, culverts, and low-lying areas.

Recommended Actions:

  • Avoid rivers, streams, and ice-covered areas.
  • Keep children away from water.
  • Residents in flood-prone areas should take precautions: check sump pumps, clear downspouts and culverts, secure items that could float, and ensure backup generators or pumps are ready.

This outlook is in effect until March 9, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., or until updated. SNC continues to monitor water levels and conditions.
