WARMING CENTERS ON STANDBY FOR JANUARY 23 & 24
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Office of Emergency Management and Safety and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Emergency Measures Program are working closely together to monitor weather conditions and coordinate community support as needed.
Due to the forecasted period of extreme cold temperatures, warming centers will be placed on standby from Friday, January 23, 2026 at 6:00 PM through Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 4:00 PM. Forecasted wind chills ranging from 20 to 40 below zero can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
Safety Precautions
- Avoid travel if possible. If you must go outside, dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and make sure at least one other person knows your whereabouts.
- Watch for signs of hypothermia, including confusion, intense shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness, and stiff muscles. Seek medical attention immediately if these symptoms occur. If medical help is unavailable, warm the person slowly using warm liquids, dry clothing, and blankets.
- If you become stranded in a vehicle, reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning by running the motor for 10 minutes every hour. While the vehicle is running, open windows slightly for fresh air and ensure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow or other obstructions.
