The Department of Community & Social Services (DCSS) is committed to enhancing the well-being of Akwesasne families through a culturally respectful and integrated approach. By blending modern practices with traditional values, we provide a range of services designed to support the community’s diverse needs. Our family-centered programs promote safety, empowerment, and healing, all while fostering strong connections within the extended family and community.

Akwesasne Child & Family Services (ACFS) focuses on the safety, well-being, and development of children within their families. Services include child protection, foster care, family support, and prevention programs. Through collaboration and cultural respect, we help families navigate challenges and create a secure environment for children to thrive.

The Akwesasne Family Wellness Program (AFWP) is dedicated to providing safe housing and trauma-informed, culturally responsive support for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). Our services are inclusive, supporting women, men, non-binary individuals, and children affected by abuse. With a focus on healing, safety planning, and advocacy, we offer emergency and second-stage housing, counseling, and access to cultural teachings.

The Community Support Program (CSP) provides financial assistance for individuals and families facing employment and financial difficulties. Designed to offer temporary support during tough times, the Community Support Program helps community members regain stability and become more employable. The program includes a wide range of financial assistance, from childcare to funeral expenses, to ensure families have the support they need.

  • Child safety assessments and intervention.
  • Foster and kinship care.
  • Family advocacy and resource development.
  • Traditional and community-based support services.

Gender-Based Violence Support

  • Emergency and second-stage housing for survivors.
  • 24-hour support line and safety planning.
  • Counseling, healing circles, and outreach.
  • Anti-human trafficking education and advocacy.

Financial & Employment Assistance

  • Temporary financial assistance for basic needs.
  • Support for funeral, burial, disability, childcare, and pregnancy-related costs.
  • Employment training, job-start support, and work-related equipment.
  • Free transportation to Iohahi:io Akwesasne Education & Training Institute.
