Housing

The Housing Sector provides financial assistance and housing support services to eligible members of the Mohawks of Akwesasne. From home repairs and new construction loans to rental support and emergency assistance, the sector works to ensure safe, stable, and affordable housing options across the territory. 

Housing Services

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has rental apartments located in all three districts: Kaná:takon, Kawehnó:ke, and Tsi Snáihne. 
   

Criteria:
  • Member of the Mohawks of Akwesasne.
  • In good standing with MCA.
  • First month's rent and security deposit due before move-in.
  • Tenant responsible for utilities. 
How to Apply:
  • Applications available at Housing office or via email.
Notes:
  • There are a limited number of apartments and a subsequent waitlist for rentals.
  • The Rent-to-Own Program is inactive.
  • Emergency housing is not available. 

The Bank of Montreal (BMO) can provide loans up to $250,000 for new construction. 

  • Payments start 6 months after construction begins. 

Criteria:
  • Same as New Construction criteria.
  • Requires a General Contractor.
  • Must have sufficient funds for square footage exceeding recommended limit. 
How to Apply:
  • Application made through the Bank of Montreal.
  • BMO contacts Housing for mortgage guarantee. 

 

The Bank of Montreal (BMO) can provide loans up to $250,000 for purchasing existing housing.
  

Criteria:
  • Same as for new construction but applies to existing homes. 
How to Apply:
  • Application made through Bank of Montreal.
  • BMO contacts MCA Housing for mortgage guarantee.

The Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation (CMHC) can assist with emergency repairs needed immediately, with funding available up to $20,000. 
    

Criteria:
  • Member of the Mohawks of Akwesasne.
  • Must be in Good Standing with MCA.
  • Primary residence.
  • Household income below $57,000 annually. 
How to Apply:
  • Application available at Housing or can be emailed.
  • Complete the application and sign each page.
  • Provide the Certificate of Possession and confirmation of income.
  • Submit 3 contractor quotes. 

The Elders Emergency Fund is a one-time allocation of up to $5,000 for unexpected emergencies such as no heat or water, roof repairs, minor carpentry repairs, etc. 
  

Criteria:
  • Member of the Mohawks of Akwesasne.
  • Must be 60 years of age or older.
  • Head of household.
  • Assistance for primary residence. 
How to Apply:
  • Notify Housing by phone, memo, or email.
  • Housing inspects and determines the nature of emergency.
  • Report submitted with recommended action and costs. 

Professional home inspections are available for community members. For more information or to schedule an inspection, contact the Housing Sector directly. 

  • New construction loan up to $250,000 with a 1% interest rate.
  • Monthly payments of $942.18 for a 25-year term. 
Criteria:
  • Member of the Mohawks of Akwesasne.
  • Must be in Good Standing with MCA.
  • Land survey and Certificate of Possession required.
  • Land must meet specific size requirements based on water and sewer access.
  • Environmental assessment and house plans required. 
How to Apply:
  • Application available at Housing or can be emailed.
  • Complete the application and sign each page. 

  • Repair loan up to $8,000 with monthly payments of $229.14 for a 3-year term.
  • Renovation loan up to $20,000 with monthly payments of $359.37 for a 5-year term. 
Criteria:
  • Member of the Mohawks of Akwesasne.
  • Reside within the Territory of Akwesasne.
  • Must be in Good Standing with MCA.
  • Certificate of Possession in your name.
  • Primary residence.  
How to Apply:
  • Application available at Housing or can be emailed.
  • Complete the application and sign each page.
  • Provide a quote for the necessary repair or renovation.
