MCA AND SRMT OFFER SUPPORT TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS
AKWESASNE — (Ohiarí:ha/June 24, 2026) The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) leadership recognize the difficult conversations currently taking place throughout our community and acknowledge the courage it takes to speak about harm and the pain that many individuals and families continue to carry.
The MCA and SRMT affirm that abuse, violence, sexual violence, family violence and exploitation have no place in Akwesasne, and recognize the harm done by the unmoderated social media account operating without support or safeguards in place for community members. Public discussions about abuse can be deeply emotional and may bring forward feelings of grief, anger, fear, shame, and trauma for survivors and families.
We understand that many survivors have come forward to share their experiences, and we encourage everyone to approach these conversations in a manner that promotes healing, and respect for the well-being of all. In the coming days, we must come together as a collective to:
- support survivors,
- protect our children and vulnerable persons,
- promote healing and wellness within our community,
- build awareness of advocacy, mental health, victim supports, and cultural resources.
We encourage any individual affected by violence, whether recent or historical, to seek support through available community resources offered by the Tribe and MCA, by calling (518) 358-2272 ext. 1995 or (613) 575-2341. No one should have to carry their experiences alone.
For immediate intervention, please call the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department at (518) 358-9200, or the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service at (613) 575-2340.
As a community, we can work together toward building a stronger, safer and healthier Akwesasne by ensuring the safety, dignity and respect for all.
