AKWESASNE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT EXTENDS CONDOLENCES TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF PETER HERNE

The Akwesasne Justice Department is deeply saddened by the passing of former Ratiianerenhserakweniéhstha (Justice) Peter J. Herne. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, children, sister, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends during this difficult time. 

Known to many as PJ, he was a respected and familiar figure in Akwesasne’s legal community. He served the community as a private defence attorney and later as a prosecutor before being appointed Chief Judge of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Court. 

PJ joined the Akwesasne Court as Court Prosecutor in 2018, serving in that role through 2020. He returned to serve with the Akwesasne Court in February 2024 when he was appointed Ratiianerenhserakweniéhstha (Justice). Throughout his career, PJ brought a wealth of knowledge and an unwavering commitment to serving the community. A strong advocate for equal access to justice, he championed the advancement of community laws and supported the development and integration of restorative justice initiatives. 

PJ firmly believed in the rule of law while recognizing the importance of compassion, dignity and humanity. These principles guided his work and reflected his dedication to strengthening the community and promoting justice for all. 

He will be dearly missed by his colleagues, the justice community and all those whose lives he touched. His contributions and legacy will continue to resonate in Akwesasne for generations to come. 

Please be advised that the Akwesasne Court will be closed on Monday, August 17, to allow staff to attend the funeral services and pay their respects to his family.
