AKWESASNE ORANGE SHIRT DAY 2026

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe invite the community to come together for Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Generations Park. 

The day will begin with a community walk at 9:30 a.m.*, followed by an opening ceremony, smoke dance competition, community social, lunch, medicine game, and a variety of free cultural and wellness activities throughout the day. 

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity to honor the courage, strength, and resilience of residential school survivors and their families while coming together through culture, ceremony, food, and community. 

The event is free and open to everyone, rain or shine.

In preparation for Orange Shirt Day, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe will be distributing free orange shirts to community members on Tuesday, September 29.

11:30 a.m.

4:00 p.m.

Youth sizes through adult 3X will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Those wishing to participate in the community walk and use shuttle transportation are asked to arrive at Generations Park by 9:00 a.m.

AMBE school buses will be located near the SRMT Ionkwakiohkwaro:ron Tribal Administration Building. Parking is available throughout Generations Park, with parking near the Administration Building available for those who wish to park closer to the shuttle pick-up area.

Shuttles will transport participants to Church Street for the 9:30 a.m. start of the community walk.

The roadway along the walk route will be temporarily closed to traffic during the community walk. Motorists are asked to expect traffic delays, plan accordingly, and use caution in the area.

The Ahkwesáhsne Mohawk Board of Education’s Mohawk Language & Culture Program is hosting a Smoke Dance Competition for youth ages 0–17.

Online registration is now closed, but participants can still sign up in person from 8:00–10:00 a.m. on the day of the event at Generations Park.

The competition will be held at the Generations Park Practice Field immediately following the opening ceremony.

Prizes
Prizes include cash, gift cards for beaded moccasins and wooden lacrosse sticks, and Kanien’kéha resource baskets.
