AKWESASNE RAISES AWARENESS FOR MMIWG

On May 5, community members came together in solidarity in recognition of Red Dress Day, held each year as a day of remembrance and action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls. The Akwesasne Family Wellness Program hosted a community event at the St. Regis Recreation, in collaboration with several community programs, to support awareness and ongoing healing.

Throughout the day, community members visited information booths and displays, received red long-sleeve shirts in recognition of the day, and shared a meal together. The event concluded with a walk along the trail, bringing participants together in a shared act of remembrance.

A sincere nia:wen to the Akwesasne Family Wellness Program (AFWP), Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS), Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department (SRMTPD), Three Sisters Program, Seven Dancers Coalition, and all participating organizations for their contributions. We also extend our appreciation to the presenters for sharing their knowledge and experiences, to those who prepared and served the meal, and to the community members who took part and helped raise awareness.

This day serves as a reminder that the violence faced by Indigenous women, girls is ongoing and requires continued attention, accountability, and action. We honour those who have been lost and stand together in support of change.
