AKWESASNE RESIDENTS REMAIN EXEMPT FROM NEW CANADIAN SURTAXES ON U.S. GOODS

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne would like to advise Akwesasró:non that the Akwesasne Residents Remission Order (SOR/91-412) continues to protect eligible residents from paying customs duties, GST/HST, federal import taxes, and the new surtaxes imposed on certain goods imported from the United States through the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Cornwall Port of Entry.

Effective September 8, 2026, the Government of Canada implemented the United States Surtax Order (2026), which applies additional surtaxes to a wide range of goods imported into Canada from the United States.

Under the Akwesasne Residents Remission Order, eligible Akwesasne residents remain exempt from applicable surtaxes on qualifying goods imported from the United States for personal use. The Remission Order also provides remission for certain qualifying goods imported by duly authorized community stores for sale to Akwesasne residents for personal use, as well as for certain goods imported by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.

Residents should continue to declare all goods when crossing the border and follow normal customs procedures.
