DRAINAGE MONITORING DURING SPRING THAW
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Department of Infrastructure, Housing & Environment – Roads Sector advises the community that standing water may be present in low-lying ditches due to wet spring weather, winter melt runoff, and a high groundwater table.
Residents are encouraged to remain attentive to changing drainage conditions during the spring thaw and to regularly monitor low-lying areas near roads, ditches, and culverts. While some standing water is typical for this time of year, residents are asked to report any unusual or worsening conditions, including but not limited to:
- Blocked, collapsed, or eroding ditches or culverts
- Flooding that persists beyond normal spring conditions
- Water undermining road shoulders, driveways, or nearby structures
Residents who observe any of the above conditions are requested to contact the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Department of Infrastructure, Housing and Environment (DIHE) promptly. Early reporting allows for assessment and corrective action before potential safety concerns arise.
