EARTH DAY IN ACTION: AKWESASNE COMES TOGETHER FOR COMMUNITY CLEANUP

Akwesasró:non and Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education schools came together this April to celebrate Earth Day by showing care for the community through the annual Akwesasne Roadside Cleanup, hosted by the MCA Environment Program.

This year’s cleanup took place over three days, with one day dedicated to each district. To add a fun and engaging element, a friendly competition was held to see which district could collect the most waste. Congratulations to the District of Tsi Snaihne for being named the 2026 winner! 🏆

Participants were equipped with pickers, gloves, and garbage bags as they ventured across their designated district. The roadside cleanup continues to be a meaningful way to give back, helping to keep our territory clean while bringing community members together for a shared purpose.

Day 1 — Kawehno:ke

Thirty community members signed up, along with several students from Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School (AMS), who came out to take part in the cleanup efforts.

Day 2 — Kana:takon

Seventeen community members participated, including one District Chief. In addition, Kana:takon School and St. Regis Daycare joined in supporting the cleanup efforts.

Day 3 — Tsi Snaihne

Thirty-seven community members participated, alongside students from Tsi Snaihne School and Head Start. Their efforts filled the dumpster, earning them the title of this year’s winning district.

Niawenhkó:wa to Chippy Lippy, Athre's Convenience, and Cheyy's Place for sponsoring a delicious lunch for participants, and to the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service for helping monitor the roadways and ensure the safety of volunteers throughout the event. 

The MCA Environment Program extends its sincere appreciation to every volunteer who took the time to participate. Your efforts made this one of the most successful roadside cleanups to date. This event would not be possible without the continued dedication and care shown by our community.
