IROQUOIS CAUCUS BUILDS RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE NATIONS OF TREATIES 6, 7 AND 8
On July 15, 2026, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) joined fellow members of the Iroquois Caucus in meeting with representatives from the Nations of Treaties 6, 7 and 8 during the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Annual General Assembly in Ottawa.
Grand Chief Leonard Lazore and members of Council represented MCA at the preliminary meet-and-greet, which provided an opportunity for the Iroquois Caucus and the Nations of Treaties 6, 7 and 8 to introduce their respective Nations and begin building relationships founded on mutual respect and a shared commitment to advancing common priorities.
The gathering recognized the importance of First Nations connecting beyond regional boundaries to exchange knowledge, learn from one another, and identify potential areas of common interest. While each First Nation has its own unique history, governance structures, and priorities, the meeting highlighted the value of continued dialogue and relationship-building among Nations across Canada.
“The strength of Nations comes from the relationships we build with one another,” said Grand Chief Leonard Lazore. “This initial meeting provided an opportunity to connect with leadership from the Nations of Treaties 6, 7 and 8, learn about each other’s priorities, and explore opportunities to continue the conversation in the future.”
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne looks forward to continuing dialogue with the Nations of Treaties 6, 7 and 8 as opportunities arise to share experiences, strengthen relationships, and explore areas of mutual interest.
