MOHAWK COUNCIL OF AKWESASNE EXTENDS CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF EDDIE GRAY
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Eddie Gray, a respected knowledge keeper, traditional medicine practitioner, and valued member of our community. Eddie dedicated his life to preserving and sharing the teachings of our ancestors, ensuring that traditional knowledge, medicines, and ceremonies would continue to guide and strengthen future generations.
Eddie’s relationship with the land and the natural medicines provided by Mother Earth began at an early age, through teachings passed down by the Elders of Akwesasne. Throughout his life, he carried these teachings forward with generosity and care, sharing his knowledge of traditional medicines, conducting medicine walks and workshops, and providing opportunities for youth and community members to connect with their culture and identity. Through his work with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Traditional Medicines Program, where he served from 1997 until his retirement, Eddie made an immeasurable difference in the well-being of our people.
His dedication extended beyond his work with MCA. For approximately 35 years, Eddie represented the Turtle Clan within the Traditional Council of Chiefs of the Iroquois Confederacy, contributing to matters of governance, land, treaties, and the responsibilities entrusted to him by his people. He also provided spiritual guidance, supported ceremonial practices, and shared his knowledge with surrounding First Nations communities. His life reflected a deep commitment to his responsibilities, his culture, and the generations that would follow him.
Recognizing Eddie’s lasting impact across Akwesasne and beyond, MCA Executive Director Shannon Roundpoint shared, “Few individuals leave a legacy that reaches so broadly across an entire community. Eddie Gray's dedication to preserving and sharing our traditional knowledge enriched the lives of countless families and strengthened the work of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. We are deeply grateful for his service, his wisdom, and the lasting impact he has left for future generations.”
Eddie’s teachings and contributions have touched many lives throughout Akwesasne and beyond. The knowledge he shared, the relationships he nurtured, and the traditions he helped sustain will continue to live on through the people he taught and the generations who will carry these teachings forward.
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is grateful for Eddie’s many years of service and for the lasting legacy he leaves within our community. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of learning from and knowing him during his lifetime.
Nia:wen, Eddie, for sharing your knowledge, walking alongside your people, and helping ensure our traditions remain strong for generations to come.
