The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne extends its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all those affected by the devastating wildfires across northern Ontario.

Our hearts are with our cousins in Namaygoosisagagun First Nation, Whitesand First Nation, Kiashke Zaaging Anishinaabek, Animbiigoo Zaagi'igan Anishinaabek, Long Lake #58 First Nation, Saugeen Ojibway Nation, Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek (Rocky Bay First Nation), Aroland First Nation, McDowell Lake First Nation, Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation (Lac La Croix First Nation), Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation, Cat Lake First Nation, Mishkeegogamang First Nation, Eabametoong First Nation, and all communities affected by or at risk from the ongoing wildfires.

We recognize the incredible strength being demonstrated by First Nations Leadership during this challenging time. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the firefighters, emergency responders, healthcare workers, volunteers, and everyone working tirelessly on the front lines to protect lives, support evacuations, and assist communities in need. Your courage, dedication, and selfless service are deeply appreciated.

To the families who have been displaced, those who have had to leave their homes with little notice, and the communities welcoming evacuees with compassion and care, please know that Akwesasne stands with you. We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers and hoping for the safety of every individual, the protection of your communities, and the safe return home of those who have been evacuated.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne stands in support of the Chiefs of Ontario's call for immediate, coordinated action from the federal and provincial governments to ensure First Nations impacted by the northern Ontario wildfires receive the emergency assistance, resources, and support they need.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is exploring opportunities to coordinate a community-led donation initiative to support First Nations affected by the northern Ontario wildfires. Additional information will be shared as details become available.

In the meantime, community members wishing to support relief efforts are encouraged to donate to verified community-led initiatives established by the affected First Nations.

As communities continue to navigate this emergency, we remain united in hope and solidarity, praying for strength in the days ahead and for the protection of the lands, waters, and communities that so many call home. Nia:wen.
