MCA UPDATE ON QUEBEC ELECTION RESULTS
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) is informing the community of a change in leadership following the Quebec provincial election held on October 5, 2026.
The Parti Québécois (PQ), led by Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, has won the provincial election and will form a minority government. This means the PQ will need support from other parties to advance legislation and other government priorities. With a significant portion of Akwesasne situated within Quebec, MCA will continue to closely follow the transition and any decisions that may affect the community.
The PQ has stated its intention to pursue a referendum on Quebec sovereignty in 2029 or 2030. As these discussions move forward, MCA will continue to clearly assert and protect Akwesasne’s own sovereignty, jurisdiction and relationship with Quebec.
Earlier this year, Grand Chief Leonard Lazore joined First Nations leadership in Quebec City to raise concerns regarding proposed constitutional changes and their potential impacts on First Nations. MCA will continue to ensure Akwesasne’s voice and position are represented as the new provincial government establishes its priorities.
Recently, the MCA signed the Akwesasne-Quebec Political Protocol Agreement on July 28, 2026. The Protocol establishes a government-to-government framework between Akwesasne and Quebec, and MCA expects the incoming government to remain committed to this relationship.
Following the election, Council will invite the incoming Premier and members of his government to meet with Council to discuss matters of importance to Akwesasne and the continued implementation of the Political Protocol Agreement.
MCA will continue to keep Akwesasronon informed of developments that may impact the community.
