MCA WELCOMES RENEWAL OF IC-AFN PROTOCOL AGREEMENT
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) is informing the community that the Protocol Agreement between the Iroquois Caucus and the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) was renewed during the Assembly of First Nations Annual General Assembly in Ottawa on July 16, 2026.
The MCA Grand Chief and members of Council attended the Annual General Assembly, where First Nations leadership from across the country gathered to discuss shared priorities, strengthen relationships, and advance collective advocacy. The renewal of the Iroquois Caucus–AFN Protocol reaffirms the ongoing cooperation, communication, collaborative strategies on issues of shared importance and mutual respect between the two organizations.
The renewed Protocol provides a framework between the Iroquois Caucus and the AFN, supporting collaboration on shared issues while recognizing the distinct voices, governance structures, and priorities of the Iroquois Caucus members.
The Iroquois Caucus is comprised of the elected Councils of Akwesásne, Kahnawà:ke, Kanehsatá:ke, Onyota’áka (Oneida Nation of the Thames), Oswé:gęˀ (Six Nations of the Grand River), and Tyendinaga, who work collectively to address common concerns and priorities affecting our communities.
“This renewed Protocol strengthens our ability to work together on shared priorities while respecting the unique voices, governance, and perspectives of our communities. Through collaboration and mutual respect, we can continue advancing the priorities that matter most to our people and our communities," noted MCA Grand Chief Leonard Lazore.
The Protocol supports enhanced communication, information sharing, and collaborative approaches on issues of mutual concern, while respecting the unique responsibilities and priorities of the Iroquois Caucus.
