MIND OVER MATTER: STORIES OF HOCKEY, HOPE & STRENGTH
What an incredible day filled with goals, grit, and great company!
On July 7, the Akwesasne Family Wellness Program was honoured to welcome former NHL player, author, and motivational speaker Jordin Tootoo to Akwesasne, joined by our own hometown hockey star Carey Terrance Jr.
Despite the summer heat, community members of all ages gathered at the A’nowara’kó:wa Arena to hear two powerful stories of resilience, perseverance, and hope.
Carey spoke about his journey as a Kanien’kehá:ka athlete pursuing his dream of professional hockey, while Jordin shared his ongoing path of healing, the importance of mental wellness, and how reconnecting with culture has helped shape his life. Together, they reminded us that our identity, community, and traditions can be powerful sources of strength — and that with determination and support, anything is possible.
Throughout the afternoon, hundreds of community members enjoyed free food, activities, and refreshments, while 400 copies of Jordin's new book, Mind Over Matter: Hard-Won Battles on the Road to Hope, were given away.
Nia:wen to everyone who attended and to the many volunteers, programs, and businesses whose support helped make this event such a meaningful success. Your generosity and commitment to our community made the day one to remember.
