OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE ON LEGISLATIVE DEVELOPMENT: CALL OUT FOR KAWEHNÒ:KE REPRESENTATIVE

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Justice Department is seeking a community representative from the district of Kawehnò:ke to fill one (1) vacant seat on the Oversight Committee on Legislative Development. The successful applicant will assist with the development of the Fire Safety Law and contribute to the legislative development process in Akwesasne.

The Oversight Committee on Legislative Development, comprised of Council members and appointed community representatives, plays a vital role in the development of legislation that protects and advances the inherent rights of the Mohawks of Akwesasne. Guided by the principles of peace, respect, and fairness, the Committee works to ensure that community perspectives are reflected throughout the legislative development process.

Currently, the Oversight Committee is working on amendments to the Residency Law and the development of both the Akwesasne Child Rights and Responsibilities Law (Eniethihswanón:na) and the Fire Safety Law.

The Committee is responsible for overseeing and facilitating community engagement, providing guidance and direction for the development of Akwesasne Laws, and considering and balancing the diverse perspectives of the Akwesasne community throughout the legislative development process.

To qualify for appointment to be a district community member on the Oversight Committee, a person must:

1. Be a Member;
2. Have knowledge of Mohawk cultures and traditions;
3. Have good character, credibility and reputation in the Akwesasne community;
4. Have good communication skills;
5. Be “in good standing” as defined in the Akwesasne Good Standing Policy;
6. Not be a Council member of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne; the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council; or, the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs;
7. Never have been convicted of an offense under the Akwesasne Banishment Law, the Akwesasne Drug Law, an indictable offense in Canada or a felony in the United States;
8. Produce to the Akwesasne Justice Department Director a valid certificate from the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC);
9. Attend and actively participate in training deemed essential for the successful operation of the Oversight Committee;
10. Attend regularly scheduled Oversight Committee meetings to conduct business and attend Community Consultation meetings as scheduled;
11. Maintain residence in their District during tenure; and
12. Sign the Oath of Office (Schedule A) within 30 days of appointment by Resolution.

Interested applicants are required to submit a letter of interest outlining how they meet the required qualifications. Appointed members will receive compensation in accordance with Council's Honorarium Policy.
