SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH & RISK OF TORNADO

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is advising community members that conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms across our area this afternoon and evening.

Current forecasts indicate storms may produce:
  • Strong wind gusts
  • Large hail
  • Heavy rainfall
  • A risk of tornadoes
  • Frequent lightning
Community members are encouraged to:
  • Seek shelter indoors when thunderstorms approach.
  • Secure loose outdoor items that could become airborne.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of severe weather.
  • Never drive through flooded roadways.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and report hazards to the appropriate authorities.
  • Keep mobile devices charged and have flashlights available in the event of power outages.
  • If you are on the water, return to shore immediately, as sudden, severe wind gusts can create hazardous conditions.
If a tornado warning is issued or a tornado is sighted:
  • Take shelter immediately in the lowest level of a sturdy building, preferably a basement or an interior room away from windows.
  • Protect your head and neck from flying debris.
  • If you are in a vehicle, do not try to outrun a tornado. Drive to the nearest sturdy shelter if it is safe to do so. If no shelter is available, move to a low-lying area away from trees and power lines, if it is safe.

If you encounter an emergency, contact Central Dispatch immediately at 613-575-2000.

Please continue to monitor updates from the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and Environment Canada, as weather conditions can change rapidly.

Stay safe, and remember: When thunder roars, go indoors.
