MCA WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY & SOCIAL SERVICES

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne would like to welcome Joseph “Joey” Morin-Lauzon as the new Director of Community & Social Services.

The Dept. of Community & Social Services (DCSS) consists of Akwesasne Child & Family Services, the Community Support Program, and the Akwesasne Family Wellness Program.

Mr. Morin-Lauzon brings years of experience in social-based services. For the past five years he has worked for Inspire Community Support Services in Cornwall as the Director of Residential and Respite Developmental Services among other positions within the organization. He also has experience working in youth addictions, justice, and mental health in the Ottawa area.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, and a graduate diploma in victimology.

Mr. Morin-Lauzon is First Nations from the Couchiching First Nation near Fort Frances, Ontario. He was raised in Cornwall and has looked forward to working with Akwesasne for many years. His goals include “fostering an environment where programs work together to serve and help people” and he is also a strong believer in continuing the education process.

“If you can train and educate your staff, it will be beneficial to the community,” he said.

Grand Chief Abram Benedict noted, “We are pleased to welcome Mr. Morin-Lauzon to this vital position and we are confident that the children and families of Akwesasne will be served well.  Community and social services play a fundamental role in building healthy communities and we are committed to securing the resources, staff and support necessary.”
