Welcome to the Akwesasne’s Community Health Services

Our Community Health Services team is dedicated to supporting the health and wellbeing of the Akwesasne Mohawk community.

Services provided:

Community education and awareness of sexually transmitted infection and blood borne infections (STBBI) including contract tracing; HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention; tuberculosis education, rabies exposure follow up; well-water testing; communicable disease management; seasonal immunizations clinics.

Environmental Health – public health assessments; employee and community training; community education and awareness (Tick, Lyme, West Nile Virus)

By providing a range of programs and services that focus on health promotion, prevention, and education, we strive to empower individuals and families to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

Our Programs:

• Health Promotion and Prevention: Through outreach, education, and community events, we work to raise awareness about healthy living and disease prevention. Our goal is to help community members make informed choices about their health and wellness.
  Services provided:
  tobacco prevention and cessation; vaccine preventable disease awareness, immunization services; injury prevention, falls prevention education, physical activity, healthy lifestyles; drug and alcohol awareness and prevention;
• Healthy Families: We offer a variety of resources and support services for families, including prenatal and postnatal care, and child development support. By nurturing strong and healthy families, we contribute to the overall health of our community and future generations.
  

  Services provided:

  Ronatakartenion Owirashon:’a Ronatakaritenion Ratiksaokon:’a/ Indigenous Healthy Babies Healthy Children – home visiting service for pregnant women and families with children ages 0-6 years of age residing within Akwesasne Ontario and Akwesasne Quebec.

  Maternal and Child Health Nursing – provides preconception awareness, education, support and follow up during pregnancy and postpartum. Midwifery Doula Support coming in Fall 2024. Provides linkages and referrals to community services.

  Tahonata’karita’kie/Healthy Arrivals – provides access to nutritional food during pregnancy, supports breastfeeding/chestfeeding in postpartum period.

  Fetal Alcohol Prevention – community awareness and education to reduce the impacts of alcohol exposure to the unborn baby.

• Environmental Health and Infection Prevention and Control: We take a proactive approach to preventing the spread of infectious diseases within our community. Our team provides education, resources, and support to help keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy.
  We prioritize the protection of our community’s environment and work to ensure that our surroundings remain safe and healthy. Our team monitors water quality, food safety, Public Health inspections, training and other environmental factors that can impact public health.

JORDAN’S PRINCIPLE

Jordan’s Principle is a child first principle named in memory of Jordan River Anderson. Jordan was a First Nations child from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba. Born with complex medical needs, Jordan spent more than two years unnecessarily in hospital while the province of Manitoba and the federal government argued over who should pay for his at-home care. Jordan died in the hospital at the age of five years old, never having spent a day in a family home. 

Jordan’s Principle makes sure all First Nations children living in Canada can access the products, services and supports they need, when they need them. Supports are provided on the basis of substantive equality, best interests of the child, culturally relevant service provision, and account for distinct community circumstances. When services are requested, the government of first contact pays for the service and can resolve any jurisdictional or payment disputes later. 

Funding can help with a wide range of health, social and educational needs, including the unique needs that First Nations Two-Spirit and LGBTQQIA children and youth and those with disabilities may have.
