SCIS INTAKE SESSION FAQs:
- The Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) is a status card that includes a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ).
- The SCIS can be used border crossings between Canada and the United States, speeding up wait and processing times.
- You can have both the Certificate of Indian Status (CIS – paper laminated version) and a SCIS.
- This session is for submitting applications only. The SCIS card will not be issued on-site. Due to the security features and the addition of the Machine Readable Zone, the application is sent to a secure off-site facility for processing and will be mailed to you once complete.
- Adults (ages 16 and older) must provide one valid piece of identification. For adults, the SCIS is valid for 10 years.
- Valid forms of identification include a passport, driver’s license, health card, or existing SCIS card.
- Minors (15 years of age or younger) do not require identification; only the parent or legal guardian must present ID. The SCIS is valid for 5 years for minors.
- Your photo will be taken at the intake session.
- There is no fee for the SCIS card.
- Due to the large volume of community members who will be applying for the SCIS during the two days, no other types of applications can be processed at this time.
- ONWA will require applicants to complete a brief community member intake form along with the SCIS application.
These sessions are hosted by MCA’s Office of Vital Statistics and facilitated by the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA).
