TSIAKWAWENNATÓNHE’TS MOVES CLOSER TO COMPLETION WITH MCA SUPPORT
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) proudly presented a cheque in the amount of $151,753 to the Tsiakwawennatónhe’ts Mohawk Language and Culture Program, in support of their efforts to complete construction of a new school building dedicated to language revitalization in Akwesasne.
Tsiakwawennatónhe’ts, meaning “We are bringing the life fire back to our language,” aims to bring back the Kanien’kehá:ka language by embracing a multi-generational, nurturing family approach to language and cultural learning, helping to undo the lasting effects of the residential school system. Children are placed at the heart of the program, while adults and educators reinforce and support the learning process.
The program’s new school building is now 50% complete thanks to support from local donors and organizations. This includes a $150,000 donation and land contribution from Two House Design-Builders, as well as generous contributions from Kanien’kehá:ka Kaianereh’kówa Kanónsesneh, Akwesasne Earth Watchers, and generous contributions of time and materials from local skilled tradespeople.
With this latest contribution from MCA, the program is one step closer to opening its doors by September 2025. This donation reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that the Kanien’kehá:ka language continues to thrive for generations to come.
