AKWESASNE FIRESMART ASSESSMENTS UNDERWAY
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Emergency Measures Program has launched the Akwesasne FireSmart Project — with property assessments now underway across the districts of Kana:takon, Kawehno:ke, and Tsi Snaihne.
What is FireSmart?
FireSmart is the Canadian standard for fire prevention and mitigation, recognized by all provinces and territories. It focuses on reducing the risk of fire damage around your home by identifying hazards in your surrounding landscape.
Protecting More Than Just Property
As part of these assessments, our team is working to identify culturally significant areas with traditional medicines and trees, on your property. The goal is to help preserve and protect these important elements, even if that means carefully relocating them to a safer area within the property.
Who is Conducting the Assessments?
Our Summer Students from the Emergency Measures Program will be out in the community conducting the FireSmart assessments. You can recognize them by their:
- Yellow high-visibility vests
- Work boots
- Aluminum clipboards
Assessments began on July 21, 2025 and will continue for the duration of the summer in all three districts.
